Fothergilla major - Mountain Witch-alder, Tall Fothergilla

Tall Fothergilla is a slow-growing native deciduous shrub with a strong upright-spreading habit and profuse blooms. The leathery dark green foliage with blue-grey undersides turn various shades of yellow, orange, and red-purple in fall.  The bottlebrush-like spikes densely packed with fragrant white flowers bloom through spring.  Blooms best in rich, moist well-drained acidic soils. 

Fothergilla is a native pollinator that provides nectar for several species of butterflies and bees.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS:  Low Maintenance.  Water regularly.  may spread by root suckers if not promptly removed.  No serious diseases or pest issues.

LANDSCAPE USES:  Accents or Group Plantings, Borders, Woodland Gardens, Foundation Plantings, Hedges, and Containers.

COMPANION PLANTS:  Clethra, Cephalanthus, Itea
